Check a Bedroom Furniture Layout
See if a bed with two nightstands and an opposite-wall dresser fits a rectangular bedroom, including side and foot clearances.
Your planning results
Furniture fit checks physical dimensions. Preferred clearance checks your selected side-passage target and at least 30 in (76.2 cm) at the foot of the bed.
Important limitations: Preferred clearance requires BOTH the selected side passage on each side and at least 30 in (76.2 cm) between the foot of the bed and the closed dresser. It is a comfort guideline, not a code requirement. Fixed layout: centered bed, two nightstands, opposite-wall dresser; doors, closets, windows, drawers and other positions are not evaluated.
How to Use the Bedroom Furniture Fit Calculator
Will a queen or king bed fit in your bedroom with enough room for nightstands, a dresser, and comfortable movement?
Our free Bedroom Furniture Fit Calculator helps you check furniture dimensions, side clearances, and the remaining space between your bed and dresser before purchasing or rearranging furniture.
Enter your room and furniture measurements above to view a scaled 2D layout and identify potential spacing problems.
What Measurements Do You Need?
| Measurement | What to Enter |
|---|---|
| Bedroom width | Interior wall width behind the headboard |
| Bedroom length | Interior distance to the opposite wall |
| Bed frame width | Full outside width of the bed frame |
| Bed frame length | Full length, including headboard and footboard |
| Nightstand width | Width of each bedside table |
| Dresser width | Full width of the dresser |
| Dresser depth | Distance the dresser projects from the wall |
| Preferred side passage | Minimum side clearance you want to maintain |
The calculator supports U.S. and metric measurements.
Important: The tool assumes the bed is centered against one wall, with two nightstands alongside it and a centered dresser on the opposite wall. It does not account for doors, closets, windows, or alternative furniture positions.
For general room dimensions, see our Standard Bedroom Size Guide.
Understanding Your Bedroom Calculator Results
The calculator displays four results that help you evaluate your proposed furniture arrangement.
1. Furniture Footprint Fit
This result checks whether the bed, two nightstands, and dresser fit inside the room under the preset arrangement.
It considers the overall width of the bed and nightstands, the combined depth of the bed and dresser, and whether the dresser fits against the opposite wall.
A “Fits this preset” result means the furniture footprints fit within the modeled room.
It does not guarantee comfortable movement or full drawer and door operation.
2. Side Clearance Around the Furniture
The calculator estimates the space between the outer edges of the bed-and-nightstand grouping and each side wall.
Formula:
Side clearance = (Room width − Bed width − 2 × Nightstand width) ÷ 2
For example:
- Room width: 132 inches
- Bed frame width: 64 inches
- Each nightstand: 20 inches
Remaining side clearance: 14 inches per side
This is narrower than the calculator’s default preferred target of 24 inches.
The result describes clearance outside the complete furniture grouping, not the space directly beside every part of the mattress.
For guidance on choosing smaller bedside tables, see our Standard Nightstand Dimensions Guide.
3. Foot-of-Bed Clearance
This result measures the remaining space between the foot of the bed and the front of the closed dresser.
Formula:
Foot clearance = Room length − Bed frame length − Dresser depth
For a 12-foot-long bedroom with an 84-inch bed frame and an 18-inch-deep dresser:
144 − 84 − 18 = 42 inches
This provides a useful starting point for walking space.
However, open dresser drawers may occupy part of this clearance. The calculator does not measure drawer extension separately.
For more detailed storage planning, read our Dresser Dimensions Guide.
4. Dresser-Wall Fit
The calculator checks whether the dresser’s width fits against the wall opposite the bed.
For example, a 54-inch-wide dresser fits within a 132-inch-wide wall, with approximately 39 inches remaining on either side when centered.
This result checks only the dresser’s position along the wall, not whether nearby doors, closets, or windows remain accessible.
Example: Will a Queen Bed Fit in an 11 × 12-Foot Bedroom?
Consider a bedroom with these measurements:
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Room width | 11 feet |
| Room length | 12 feet |
| Bed frame | 64 × 84 inches |
| Nightstand width | 20 inches each |
| Dresser | 54 inches wide |
| Dresser depth | 18 inches |
| Preferred side passage | 24 inches |
Calculator results:
| Result | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Furniture footprint | Fits the preset arrangement |
| Side clearance | 14 inches each |
| Foot-of-bed clearance | 42 inches |
| Dresser-wall fit | Fits |
What does this mean?
The furniture fits geometrically, but the side passages beside the full furniture grouping are narrower than the preferred 24-inch target.
Replacing two 20-inch nightstands with narrower models, reducing the bed-frame width, or considering another layout could improve the arrangement.
For tighter rooms, our 10×10 Bedroom Layout Guide explores how bed size and furniture placement influence available space.
How Much Space Should You Leave Around Bedroom Furniture?
A bedroom needs enough clear floor space for walking, making the bed, opening drawers, and accessing storage.
These measurements provide practical starting points.
| Location | Suggested Planning Clearance |
|---|---|
| Accessible side of the bed | Approximately 24–30 inches |
| Foot of the bed | Approximately 24–36 inches |
| In front of a dresser | Approximately 30–36 inches or more |
| Main bedroom walkway | Approximately 30–36 inches |
| Closet or wardrobe | Enough for full door or drawer operation |
These are general residential planning ranges, not universal building-code requirements.
The amount of clearance needed depends on furniture size, room shape, mobility needs, and daily use.
When selecting a bed, measure the complete frame rather than relying only on mattress dimensions. A standard U.S. queen mattress is 60 × 80 inches, while a king is 76 × 80 inches, but bed frames may be larger.
The Sleep Foundation’s queen bed dimensions guide explains standard mattress sizes.
Before Buying Bedroom Furniture
A bedroom can pass a basic footprint calculation and still have practical layout problems.
Before purchasing, check the following:
- Door movement: Confirm bedroom and closet doors can open fully.
- Drawer clearance: Measure how far dresser and nightstand drawers extend.
- Window access: Avoid blocking essential ventilation or access to windows.
- Walkways: Protect the main route between the entrance, bed, and storage.
- Furniture delivery: Verify that large furniture can pass through hallways and doorways.
- Furniture stability: Secure dressers and other appropriate storage furniture against tip-over hazards.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign provides guidance on preventing furniture tip-over injuries.
If the opposite-wall dresser arrangement feels too tight, explore our guide on where to put a dresser in a small bedroom for alternative locations.
Practical tip: Use painter’s tape to mark the bed, nightstands, and dresser footprints on the floor. Add space for open drawers and door swings, then walk through the room before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my bed will fit in my bedroom?
Measure the bedroom’s interior width and length, then compare those measurements with the complete bed-frame dimensions. Include space for nightstands, other furniture, and walking clearance. The calculator above checks one common bedroom arrangement.
Can a queen bed fit in a 10 × 10-foot bedroom?
A queen bed can physically fit in many 10 × 10-foot rooms. However, the usable space depends on the bed-frame size, nightstands, dresser placement, and door locations. A compact arrangement may work better than a symmetrical layout with several large furniture pieces.
How much space should be left beside a bed?
Approximately 24–30 inches is a useful starting range for accessible sides of a bed. Narrower spaces may work in compact rooms but can make movement and bed-making more difficult.
How much space should be between a bed and dresser?
Approximately 30–36 inches is a practical starting point where space allows. You should also check how far the dresser drawers extend and whether there is room to stand comfortably while using them.
Does this calculator work for king-size beds?
Yes. Enter the complete outside width and length of your king-size bed frame. The calculator uses your actual measurements rather than assuming a particular mattress size.
Can I move the furniture around in the calculator?
No. The current tool checks a preset arrangement with a centered bed, two nightstands, and an opposite-wall dresser. It does not provide drag-and-drop furniture placement or evaluate alternative layouts.
