Screen a Sofa Delivery Route
Compare three rectangular orientations of your furniture with straight door and hallway openings before arranging delivery.
Your planning results
Important limitations: Conservative screening of an ideal rectangular bounding box at a straight opening. Sofa arms, packaging, pivoting, diagonal movement, doorway thickness, turn geometry, and stairs are NOT simulated. Passing this screen is not a delivery guarantee.
How to Use the Sofa & Furniture Delivery Fit Checker
Will your new sofa fit through the front door, hallway, or bedroom entrance?
Our free Sofa & Furniture Delivery Fit Checker helps you compare furniture dimensions with doorway and hallway clearances before arranging delivery.
Enter your sofa’s measurements and the narrowest openings along your delivery route. The calculator checks three simplified furniture orientations and identifies possible clearance problems.
What Measurements Do You Need?
| Measurement | What to Enter |
|---|---|
| Sofa overall length | Distance between the outer edges of the sofa arms |
| Sofa overall depth | Distance from the front to the back |
| Sofa overall height | Height from floor to the highest point |
| Narrowest door clear width | Actual unobstructed width of the tightest doorway |
| Door clear height | Usable height inside the doorway |
| Narrowest hallway width | Smallest unobstructed hallway width |
| Handling allowance | Extra clearance around the furniture |
| Tight turns on route | Whether the delivery involves corners, stairs, or landings |
The calculator supports inches and centimeters.
Important: Measure the actual usable openings, not just the nominal door sizes. Hinges, door stops, trim, handles, and other obstructions can reduce clearance.
For typical sofa measurements, see our Standard Couch Dimensions Guide.
Understanding Your Furniture Fit Results
The calculator checks three simplified orientations:
- Upright: Sofa length extends across the opening.
- On its end: Sofa depth becomes the width across the opening.
- On its side: Sofa height becomes the width across the opening.
These are rectangular measurement comparisons. The calculator does not simulate diagonal movement, pivoting, or the complete physical delivery path.
1. Straight-Door Fit Check
This result indicates whether at least one modeled furniture orientation passes the entered doorway width and height restrictions.
The calculator accounts for your selected handling allowance.
A passing result is a useful preliminary indication, not a guarantee that the furniture can be moved through the doorway.
2. Hallway Clearance
The calculator checks whether at least one furniture orientation satisfies the narrowest hallway-width measurement.
It does not evaluate corridor length, ceiling obstructions, or the space needed to rotate the sofa.
For example, a sofa may satisfy the hallway-width check but still be too long to turn into an adjoining room.
3. Possible Furniture Orientation
If the same orientation passes both the doorway and hallway-width checks, the tool identifies that orientation.
Otherwise, it reports that no straightforward orientation passes its simplified screening.
A failed result does not prove delivery is impossible. Furniture with removable components or a suitable diagonal moving path may require separate professional assessment.
4. Overall Delivery-Route Caution
If your route includes stairs, tight corners, or landings, the calculator warns that these sections have not been evaluated.
Example: Will an 84-Inch Sofa Fit Through a 36-Inch Door?
Consider these measurements:
| Measurement | Value |
|---|---|
| Sofa length | 84 inches |
| Sofa depth | 36 inches |
| Sofa height | 33 inches |
| Door clear width | 36 inches |
| Door clear height | 79 inches |
| Narrowest hallway width | 40 inches |
| Handling allowance | 1 inch per side |
| Tight turns | Yes |
With the sofa modeled on its side:
Required straight-opening width = 33 + 2 = 35 inches
The modeled height is 36 inches, plus the calculator’s handling allowance, which is below the 79-inch door opening.
The calculator therefore identifies a possible orientation for the straight doorway and hallway-width checks.
However, the 84-inch sofa length still needs sufficient maneuvering space. Because this route includes turns, successful delivery cannot be confirmed from these results alone.
This is why checking the complete delivery route matters as much as measuring the doorway.
How to Measure a Doorway for Sofa Delivery
A doorway’s advertised size may differ from the usable opening.
Follow these steps:
- Open the door fully and measure the narrowest horizontal clearance.
- Measure the usable height from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction.
- Account for hinges, handles, trim, and door stops.
- Check whether the sofa must turn immediately before or after the doorway.
- Repeat these measurements for every doorway along the route.
Our Interior Door Width Guide explains the difference between nominal door width and actual clear opening.
For vertical measurements, see How Tall Is a Door Frame?.
The Pottery Barn furniture delivery guide also explains why diagonal furniture depth, door clearance, and hallway turning space matter.
What About Hallway Turns, Stairs, and Elevators?
A sofa may pass a straight doorway but fail at a corner, staircase, or elevator.
Before purchasing, check:
- Hallway turns: Measure the available space before and after each corner.
- Staircases: Account for stair width, handrails, ceiling height, and landings.
- Elevators: Check the entrance and interior height, width, and depth.
- Low ceilings: Consider beams, lights, sloped ceilings, and other obstructions.
- Removable parts: Confirm whether legs, backs, cushions, or sectional components can be removed safely.
- Packaging: Check whether delivery dimensions differ from assembled product dimensions.
For sectional sofas, measure each separate delivery component rather than relying only on the assembled dimensions. Our Standard Sectional Sofa Dimensions Guide explains the different shapes and sizes.
Before Ordering a Sofa: Quick Checklist
- Measure the sofa’s complete outside dimensions.
- Confirm whether any components are removable.
- Measure every doorway on the delivery route.
- Check hallway widths and turning space.
- Inspect staircases and elevator access.
- Allow suitable handling clearance.
- Confirm packaged or assembled delivery dimensions.
- Discuss difficult access with the retailer or delivery team before ordering.
Tip: A smaller sofa isn’t automatically the better choice. The correct furniture should fit both your room and the route into it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an 84-inch sofa fit through a 32-inch door?
It depends on the sofa’s depth, height, construction, and the surrounding space. Some sofas can pass through narrow openings when repositioned, but others cannot. A straight-opening comparison is only the first check.
How do I know if my sofa will fit through the door?
Measure the sofa’s overall length, depth, and height. Then measure the actual doorway opening and surrounding maneuvering space. Use the calculator for an initial assessment and confirm difficult deliveries with the retailer.
Can you turn a sofa sideways to fit through a doorway?
Sometimes. Turning a sofa on its side can reduce the dimension passing across the doorway. However, the maneuver also requires enough height, corridor length, and turning clearance.
How much extra space should I allow for sofa delivery?
Allowing approximately 1–2 inches of handling clearance is a useful starting point for preliminary measurements. More space may be needed depending on the furniture’s shape, packaging, and delivery conditions.
Does this calculator check stairs and tight corners?
No. The calculator screens straight doorway and hallway widths using simplified rectangular orientations. It cannot guarantee clearance around stairs, landings, corners, or complex delivery routes.
